  1. I am flying through the Clive Cussler novel, mainly because the chapters are short and I feel as though I have not read anything, is I keep reading. In this story, Kurt Austin will try to save the world from a mad man set to break it apart with an earthquake machine he has invented. It' fast paced and let's me journey away from the problems of the day. It also keeps me up later than I would like. This book introduces new futuristic gadgets. It's a good piece of escapism...

  2. What feelings did you have as you read the story? Find some places that make you feel that way.

I’m reading ‘Keeping Faith’ and I’m very pleased with this choice. Maybe it isn’t exactly book about me because I’m not married but some sentences which I read in this book are universal for everyone. For example when the main character caught her husband cheating on her she bury her face in her hand and thought ‘Oh, God. It happening again.’ This sentence appeals to everyone who would be in a similar situation as Mariah. When I’m reading this book it seems to me that I exactly understand situations in which character found herself even if nothing else has met me. Maybe it's because I read a lot of books written by this author and I began to understand her way of expressing emotions and creating characters in her books. I don’t like to read foolish books talking about nothing or about something which is unrealistic and and this is the reason why I appreciate Picoult’s books so much.

    1. Natalia...Watch you tense and punctuation--For example, when the main character caught her husband cheating on her, she bury [buried] her face in her hand [hands] and thought, ‘Oh, God. It [is]happening again.’ This sentence appeals to everyone who would be in a similar situation as Mariah. In the sentence with the example, you use past tense while in the other sentence, you use present tense. it's alright to stay in present tense to talk about literature...

Your content is clear and fluid...

  3. I am reading "The Stranger" scrupulously through every line and trying to understand a lot of things that is happening in the main character's head. The main character in the novel is French Algerian Meursault who learns about the death of his mother and comes to the funeral. He is not very emotional or if he is, he is simply hiding those feelings. He even did not show his emotions when he killed an Arab man.But Meursault always speaks his mind and some how it helps him to survive. His personality helps readers to see more details in the personalities of the other characters or even see a piece of themselves. Marija Frenkel (ADV C)

  4. The most interesting quotation of "Into the wild". Christopher McCandless - the main character of the book sent his letter to a friend called Ron: "The very basic core of a man's living spirit is a passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. Move around, be nomandic, make each day a new horizon" - Christopher "Alex" McCandless. I did like the quote, because it is very inspiring one, it teaches us how to live our lifes to its fullest. I didn't read the whole book though, so i might find some more inspiring quotes later on...

  5. What feelings did you have as you read the story?
I am reading the "ABC Murders" book and the author has the talent to keep your attention and intense feelings throughout the book. I like the Belgian detective who is very confident in what he has to do. I like this part in the book where Donald Fraser ask the Belgian detective " Who are you anyway? You don't belong to the police." And Poirot answers "No, Monsieur, I am better than the police." The book creates the feelings of not knowing what happens next, and that's why I like. I try to feel what Poirot feels.

  6. When does the story take place? Was it long ago, in the future or the present? What did you learn about this time period?

The book that I'm reading - "The true story of Hansel and Gretel" takes place in the 1940's in the middle of the Second World War.
Was it long ago? Well, for me it was, because that was decades before I was even born.
What did I learn about this time period? Well, that should be funny, but actually I found out when did the WW2 really took place, because even though I do fine in most of the subjects at school, history is my blind side.
So I can say that this book is very useful in all ways, starting with the geographic sophistication, finishing with better English skills and history.

  7. Who is the main character? Why is this character important to the story?
I have chosen to read a book "Between shades of gray" by Ruta Sepetys. The main character of this book is 15-years-old-girl Lina, who was deported to Siberia. She is the oldest child of the family. Lina is an average girl and a gifted artist. In those times she had a very strong personality. Lina was the one to set her family free. In my opinion, Lina was very courageous, carring and self-confident.

  9. When I was taking my book "Animal Farm" to my hands I was convinced that it is parody of people's characters. That's the reason why I can say that I was a little dissapointed by the lecture when I figured out that the book is parody of totalitarianism. Of course I don't regret reading that story. Writing about disappointment, the characters are disappointed by their farmer. Mr. Jones isn't good enough to dealing with his farm and animals. This results in rebellion. Now I'm waiting to see how the rebellion will end up.

  10. The main character of the book „My sister’s keeper” written by Jodi Picoult is thirteen-years old girl named Anna. Most people have children by accident. This is because they drink too much on the party or for thousands of other reasons that really aren’t very convincing. Anna’s parents have her for some definite reasons. Her eldest sister Kate is suffering from leukaemia. Anna has to undergone countless surgeries, transfusions and injections to help sister fight her illness. One child dedicated to the needs of other seriously ill. Does it sound fair? I think that using one of our childen to save the life of another is very bad thing and somehow it excuse the first sentence which was told by Anna: “In my first memory, I am three years old and I am trying to kill my sister”.

  11. I've already finished reading my book "The Tess of the d'Ubervilles". Its main character makes me feel very different during the various scenes of it. At first, she fascinates me because of her beauty described in the book. Also, I feel bad about her being seduced by the Alec Dubberville to sleep with him. That is disgusting and not fair. Later, Tess falls in love with Angel Clare an that makes me feel happy for them. But then she tells him true about her past and I feel sad about her being left by her new husband on the first day of their marriage. There are some moments in this book, when I feel angry on Tess because she gets back to her old husband and she sends a vicious letter to him. I feel afraid that he will never come back to her. But then he comes. And then I feel even more angry because she says him "It's too late. You'd better go now." How can she even say that to him? Her dream came true and she is letting him go? Finally, she does a wicked thing. She kills Alec Duberville and leaves with Angel. It made me feel confused. Why did she do it? She ruined her own life. The story could have a happy ending, they would have gone with Angel and lived happily ever after. But she is murdered for her crime. So, at the end, my feelings compose of two emotions - anger because of her actions and sadness because of the miserable end of the story.

  12. I'm reading "True believer" by Nicholas Sparks. When I decided to read this book, I thought that it's about love and nothing else. Well, now I can see that I was wrong, because this book faces more things than just love. I have read 50 pages so far and in these pages the main character Jeremy talks about his past, probably that's how author wants to present everything that is going to happen later. And in the past Jeremy had a problem - he had to choose between his job and his wife. Both things were very important for him, but he had to make a decision. It sometimes happens to me and I believe that for everyone else too, because sometimes we have to choose, even if we don't want to, and we never know which decision would be the right one. I have never read other Nicholas Sparks' books, but I really appreciate that he doesn't only write banal things about love that I have already heard a million times, but he also writes about topical problems and, if we take a closer look at what the main character of his book chooses and what are the consequences of that, we can find an easier solution when we have the same problem.

I am reading "One day of the life of Ivan Denisovich" by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. It is really amazing and each page astonishes me with lots of situations the main character and other prisoners had to face during the Second Word War in camps. I am aware of the fact that such things actually did happen and I wonder how could people live and work as there were almost 30 degrees cold, they had no food and no warm clothes?! I am completely astounded knowing through what our grandfathers had to pass.
I look forward to finish the book and discuss about it with those who already have read it.

  14. The story of the book "Lord of the Flies" takes place in uninhabited island in a remote region of the Pacific Ocean. There are white sandy beaches, a lot of rocks. However, the biggest part of island is covered by the tropical forest. The environment is described very vivid and picturesque. In my opinion, a descriptive setting is critical in this kind of books, because it makes more easily for readers to imagine a new place, which is by the way new and for the characters of the book.

  15. Usually I get into the plot effortlessly, empathize with characters and eventually become a part of that imagined world. While reading this book I pay a lot of attention so as to be only story-watcher, though. Well, it doesn’t work anyway. I identify with the children and the Witch as well. I am overwhelmed with the feelings gathering in my mind. So I almost feel the sweetness of the candy from German that Gretel tastes…and I feel the relief that it’s not a gun barrel… I almost feel the warmth of Hanzel’s hand warming mine…just like Magda. And even though I cannot imagine being in their shoes and I don’t know what would I do…I gradually explore a literally dreadful reality of World War II.

What feeling did you have as you read the story? Once I start to think more about it I feel really bad for those people who had to live during this time. I've never felt starvation, cold or itching caused by lice… I can't imagine how they felt at this time. I can't even imagine how strong these people had to be to survive. if someone left me in the huge forest, I would probably die in three days. So that's what fascinates me about these people, they always had hope in hopeless situations.

Q: Name one or two minor characters. How was it resolved? What did you learn about these characters?

A: The minor characters don't often stand out as much, unlike the main ones. You can resolve their importance by noticing how often are they mentioned and seen through the story. For this novel, two of the minor important characters are Thurston and LeBlanc, they are glaciologists that work in a base, under a specific glacier in the Alps. They are only seen a couple of times, mostly just helping the main characters along their journey. But through their actions I've learned, that they are hard working, LeBlanc is quite humorous, because of his statement about the "comfort" of his workplace; Thurston is quite devoted.

However because of the detailed description you can also learn something about the main characters Danny Saunders and Reuven Malter.

The way they play the game reveals their character attributes:
"I told my team we're going to kill you apikorsim this afternoon." This is a quote from Danny. He says it to Reuven.

The girl who had suffered loneliness, bullying, hate, mockery. At first, Jane was just a little girl and lived in Gateshead, she was very patient, kind and not brave. She did everything what people ordered her to do. After some time, when she grew up, she moved to Lowood. In that place she had different kind of experience - met new people, even new rules of life. It is hard for me to imagine how I would act in those circumstances because I have never suffered hard times like that. She adjusted all the rules - cold places, strict time rules, everyday she needed to tidy her room because if not - she would be punished. From my point of view, it must be very hard to see her new friends suffering disasters and those who could not stay alive. However, she stood calm and level-headed all the time. I understand that you could never know what is going to happen and you may be lucky and get what you want if you deal with every problem. Jane Eyre is growing not only by age, but also by experience and intelligence. I strongly believe that she will find her way, so will I.

  35. How are the feeings of the main character and your feelings alike? How are they different?

Jon Krakauer does his best in presenting the personality of Chris McCandless, whom he has never met. It is hard for anyone to fully underastand what is going on in another person's heart and mind. But, sharing some similarities in their characters, Krakauer is really quite accurate and he tries to keep a distance in telling the story, so that you can make some interpretations of your own. Thus I feel righteous to assume that what the book suggests about Chris's feelings is more or less truth. 'Into the Wild' fascinates me as I find some resemblance of my own thoughts in the pages of this novel. For one reason, Chris struggles to find meaning in life. He seeks for something more than a well payed job or secure future. By plunging into raw nature, where you have to fight for survival, he expects to reveal the essence of our being, to comprehend what we are here for. As an eighteen-year-old, I too have some doubts, I am eager to make a change in the world, to take it on and do something grand and significant. However, I am very different from Chris. To begin with, I am not nearly as fearless (or reckless - depending on how you see it). I doubt I could commit to such an adventure alone. I appreciate life too much to juggle with it like that, no matter how paradoxical it may seem. More over, I certainly could not do that kind of damage to my family. Chris has a younger sister, to whom he is extremely close and who is destroyed by his death. Having an elder brother myself, I cannot but be mad at Chris's behaviour when it comes to breaking all bonds with his family. I can't understand how anyone in hir right mind could be so harsh to his loved ones, to those, who care about him. At this point, I cannot call this anything else than pure selfishness. For these contriversial reasons, the novel captures me, and puzzles me, and doesn't leave me still for the rest of the day after reading it.

It extends the reader's knowledge about the relationship between Chris and Emily as well as their families. The main aim of describing their relationship is to enable the reader to answer the question if Emily had been suicidal or a bit obsessed with Chris. Although she is dead she isn't in the real heaven, but she is stuck in some kind of a middle place, where she sees her family, friends, her first love and others trying to live their lives in the real world without Sussie. The problem is that she can do nothing to help her family find the man, who killed her or just show what she feels about them. She is just stuck in here until the murder will be solved. However Sussie is not the only one who has problems. Her family members can't find the killer or eaven Sussies bones, so they still believe that she is alive. I am still impressed even now. I am a little bit depressed, maybe because I am too sensitive to people's problems or because the author is really awesome, or maybe both of them. 43. There was a part in my book (A Portrait of an Artist) where the boys had to do sums in the classroom. The teacher used the 'let's compete' technique which, I believe, never works. I've seen such methods in classes before and the situation pictured in the book was an analog of them. At first, everybody is trying their best but when the first and the second are finished with the task, all the motivation passes and any eagerness or drive felt before just wash off. The same happened with the boy who was slow with sums. I could remember myself in his place. It's a bad habit and a bad learning method --to compete. I got rid of that and still sometimes the tension of competition is apparent in class. I hope with time people will learn to improve in comparison with themselves and not with others.

  44. Who is the main character? Why is this character important to the story?

The main character in "The Lord of the Rings" is Frodo Beggins. He was a hobbit from Hobbiton, and he'd lived very peaceful life with his adoptive father Bilbo, until the beginning of the main story.

He has an imortant role in the Quest of the Ring where he wore the Ring of the Power to Mount of Doom, where it was ultimately destroyed. He was a Ring-bearer, and one of the three Hobbits who sailed from Middle-earth to the Uttermost West at the end of the Third Age.

  45. Who is the main character? Why is this character important to the story?

In the book "Things fall apart" the main character is a man called Okonkwo. Okonkwo becomes productive, wealthy, thrifty, brave, violent, and adamantly opposed to music and anything else that he perceives to be soft, emotional. Okonkwo achieves great social and financial success. As far as I've read I didn't see no sudden changes in behavior or mindset. Okonkwo’s problem – his inability to adapt or compromise his ethics to changing situations that call for more tolerance or compassion.

  46. I am reading "Northanger Abbey" by Jane Austen.I decided to answer the question : When does the story take place? Was it long ago, in the future or the present? What did you learn about this time period?

The story takes place in England , probably in the eighteen century . Firstly , the main character of the book Catherine comes to Bath - a big typical medieval city . I think that it was time of different prejudices . For example , people couldn't talk to each other on the ball until somebody will represent you to others . The events in the second part of book happen in the Northanger Abbey - it's a patrimony of the father of mr. Tilney , which Catherine probably love. Northanger Abbey - this two words sounds thrilling to Catherine. She likes everything mysterious , supernatural and terrible , like gothic novels , vampires and ghosts . So she try to find something enigmatic in the castle of mr. Tilney.

  47. Where does the story take place? Discuss the important settings and explain why you believe each is important to the story.
Now I am reading "Of Mice and Men". The story takes place in California, during the Great Depression. The main characters are George Milton and Lennie Small. George Milton: A quick-witted man who is Lennie's guardian and best friend. His friendship with Lennie helps sustain his dream of a better future.Lennie Small: A mentally disabled, but physically strong man who travels with George and is his constant companion.[6] He dreams of "living off the fatta' the lan'" and being able to tend to rabbits. His love for soft things conspires against him, mostly because he does not know his own strength, and eventually becomes his undoing.

  48. My book is The Death Relic. The main character is probably a girl called Maria. She is an expert in Christianity and history and she goes to Cancun for a work trip. But her plans changes when her new boss kidnaps and she finds guns in his car. She asks her ex boyfriend and his friend (they both works in a kidnapping company and before were soldiers) to come and help her. I would not like to write more of the story, it's really just a little tiny peace of story and everything is just so interesting. I would like to talk about how the main character Maria and I are alike. For the first, I really like the fact that she, after her boss disappeared, did not leave everything and didn't went home, but decided to help him and make this clear even if it's dangerous and it can cost her life. I would have done the same. You know, adventures, adrenaline, I love it. So we would be pretty much alike each other. Except the fact that she is so dramatic, I mean, she takes things so seriously and she is used to over react. I am not like this. I like to cool of and think clearly, no panic, no stress, just chill.

  49. Where does the story take place?

I'm reading "The true story of Hansel and Gretal". All action in the book is happening during second World War. First of all Hansel, Gretal and their parents are in the old Poland forest. But then action takes us to small Poland village "Piaski".
Now I finished half of the book and it doesn't get boring. I don't really like to read books but this one really got my attention. I hope I will have motivation to finish it.

  50. Pi is cast adrift in a lifeboat with a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan, and a huge Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The first week is a horrific one as the animals battle for survival in the cramped boat and Pi quakes with fear as he tries to avoid being part of the food chain. Eventually, just the tiger and he are left in the boat. The rest of the book is Pi's tale of 227 days at sea. The boat is well stocked for a human, but Pi soon realizes that his only hope for survival is to keep the tiger content and subservient to him. Pi lives in constant terror of Richard Parker, but manages to keep him supplied with fish, turtles, and fresh water so that he doesn't turn on him. Pi spends most of him time in despair, not just emotional, but physical. Yet, at times, he is dazzled by the wonderfulness of God's creation and creatures. He refuses to give up and die and instead lives by his wits and determination. He has to abandon being a vegetarian to survive on anything he can eat, which he finds he attacks with the savagery of a starved animal.

  55. Did this book change your thinking on this topic?

We usually assume that big social changes require huge resources and investments. There are, however, situations in which large-scale, systemic, and durable social changes have been introduced by individuals who initially have no resources other than their social passion, creativity, and entrepreneurial frame and mind; we can say that, in a way, they create “something out of nothing.”
This book took me from the classical definitions of social entrepreneurship into a syndromic concept of this phenomenon, followed by a summary of the various academic and theoretical approaches to social change…

I can not say that after reading this book I feel so much emotions but I feel something like aversion to really wealth people who can see only in limits of their wealth. Also I am angry about behavior of the main characters and also I feel irritation about their silly dialogs. But I really love describing of the palace, nature and diamonds.
